The advantages of using conference calls have been realized by both big and small business concerns. Of late, their utility in educational organization, training programs and marketing and sales has also come to the forefront. An  individual is no longer tied to a specific place or geographical area to participate in a conference or attend some educational program. Operator-attended conference calls are generally used for top-notch conferences involving a large number of participants.

The service provider supports the conference by providing a wide array of services, including operators who organize conferences by bringing in the participants, introduce calls and being a question-and-answer moderator. There is also live call monitoring, roll calls, sub-conferencing support, translation and even faxing and emailing services. Dial out conference calls provide the added benefit of calling in any participant at the last minute.

The various services provided by conference calling seek to field the problems that emanate from such calls and bring the call's rhythm and course in par with face-to-face meetings. Call monitoring enables the operator to bring in participants mid-way through the conference. Faxing services enable the distribution of relevant documents when required during the conference, roll call enables everyone to recognize the participants, and sub-conferencing allows other private sub-conferences among the participants while the main conference proceeds. Large office conferences allow organized discussions by arranging a few specific speakers.

Broadcasting services mute all other participants and allow only one speaker, while question and answer services enable the establishment of some order during conferencing, and polling services enable voting on specific issues. Recorded conference calls can be used later as an active product or a marketing tool. There are numerous other services that can be opted for.
